An exercise to get a sense of calm - The 4-7-8 Breathing Exercise

This exercise is a simple, yet powerful tool to quickly calm the nervous system and refocus your mind. It's great for moments when you’re feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or mentally cluttered.

How to do it:

  1. Find a Quiet Space: If possible, step away from your desk, phone, or the courtroom environment. Even just a minute in a slightly more private spot can help.

  2. Sit or Stand Comfortably: You don’t need to be in any specific posture, just make sure your body is relaxed and aligned.

  3. Inhale for 4 Seconds: Breathe in gently and fully through your nose, counting to four in your head.

  4. Hold Your Breath for 7 Seconds: Pause after inhaling, holding the breath at the top of your inhale for a count of seven.

  5. Exhale for 8 Seconds: Exhale slowly through your mouth, making a whooshing sound, while counting to eight in your head.

  6. Repeat 3-4 Times: You don’t need to go beyond 3-4 rounds. This will take less than a minute but will reset your focus and restore a sense of calm.

Why it works:

  • 4-7-8 Breathing activates your parasympathetic nervous system, which calms you down by lowering stress hormones like cortisol.

  • It encourages mindful breathing, pulling your attention away from the chaos and allowing you to center your thoughts.

  • This exercise is easy to do anywhere—before a meeting, between hearings, or even in a tense moment with a client.

Benefits:

  • Immediate relief from stress

  • Enhanced mental clarity

  • Improved decision-making and focus

It’s a tool you can use in just a few seconds when you need to bring back your composure, no matter the pressure you're under.
