What is the difference between self-esteem and confidence?

A short blog about self-esteem and confidence. Low self-esteem and lack of confidence can have a negative effect on people's relationships, career/work, sports or studies. It can also affect ones health, both mental and physical.

I was always looking outside myself for self-esteem and confidence, but it comes from within. It is there all the time.
It's inside of you

So, what is the difference between self-esteem and confidence? 🤔

Your self-esteem is about your self-worth, your self-value and your self-image. Confidence is about what you can do, your skills, abilities, ideas.

Confidence is visible, it shows on the outside, how people behave, and self-esteem is what you think about yourself internally. It is possible to have good confidence about something, and have low self-esteem at the same time. E.g. One can believe in his/her skills (confidence), but see oneself as unlovable (low self-esteem).

Self-esteem

Low self-esteem stems from not having had your needs met when you were young. For example: I didn't receive praise. I didn't feel loved. I didn't feel significant. I had to earn love.

Sadly, we can’t change this, but what we can do is… praise ourselves. Praise is the best way to improve your self-esteem! Praise yourself! And say out loud: I am loved. I am enough. I matter. I am significant. I belong here. I am lovable. I am a great person. I will always listen to you.

I am loved. I am enough. I matter. I am significant. I belong here. I am lovable. I am a great person.
Confidence

Low confidence comes from not believing in yourself. Believing in your skills, abilities, ideas. It also stops you from accepting who you are. The good and the bad.

A quick tip to improve your confidence.

Focus on your achievement, things that have gone well, compliments you have received.

Write down your achievements, compliments you've received, things that have gone well.
